A huge bolt of energy had appeared from the lead ship. It shimmered, growing steadily larger. Janeway braced herself for impact, counting down the seconds. Three... two... one...

The whole ship jolted, but the shields seemed to hold.

A whining noise started somewhere in the impulse engines. How long till the tube fired? It couldn't be long, she thought.

Twenty seconds? Twenty-five?

"No damage," Tom said. "Shields holding at sixty-seven percent."

"Will we make it across?" she asked. "We're cutting it close."
